Virginia’s Individual Insurance Policy Requirements
- Insurance companies can decide to decline to give you an individual policy due to the status of your health, except for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield. Both of these companies cannot turn down applicants.
- Insurance policies are required to cover certain services, including mammograms.
- Insurance policies can exclude pre-existing conditions, or conditions that occurred in twelve months before the policy is issued, for twelve months or may include an elimination rider that permanently excludes the medical condition from coverage.
- Individual policies can be canceled for fraud or for non-payment of premiums, but cannot be canceled because of illness.
