Texas Individual Insurance Policy Requirements
- Insurance companies are not required to approve every person who applies for individual insurance.
- Depended grandchildren may be covered.
- Insurance companies are required to offer a plan that includes specific benefits, including childhood immunizations. Insurance companies can also offer lower cost plans which do not cover all of the services that Texas requires on at least one plan.
- HMOs are not allowed to pre-exclude any health conditions.
- Other types of insurance plans can exclude pre-existing conditions, or conditions that occurred within five years of issuing the policy, for up to two years and also have the right to exclude pre-existing conditions permanently.
- An individual healthcare policy cannot be canceled due to illnesses.

Texas State Insurance Assistance
- Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool offers individuals who have been turned down by insurance companies for health reasons coverage. Coverage includes hospital services, prescription drugs, and ambulance services.
- TexCare offers two plans that cover children, CHIP and Children’s Medicaid, to qualified low income families. Caretakers can also be covered under these policies as long as the child or children covered live at home.
- SKIP offers insurance coverage to children from families with qualified low income. State employees are eligible for this program.
