North Carolina’s Individual Insurance Policy Regulations
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield cannot reject applications for individual coverage. All other companies have the right to reject applications.
- Disabled children may be able to continue to receive coverage under their parents’ policy after the children reach the age of majority if the children are unable to support themselves.
- Individual policies are required to cover some services including pap smears, mammograms, and diabetes treatment.
- Pre-existing conditions, or conditions that occurred within twelve months of receiving coverage, can be excluded twelve months and, in some cases, can be excluded permanently.

North Carolina Health Choice for Children is available to children from families with qualified income levels. Coverage includes checkups, hospitalization, and dental care. Parents may have to pay an enrollment fee and copays.
North Carolina Health Check is available for children who come from qualified, low income families. There are no premiums or copays in this program.
