Nevada Health Insurance

Healthcare insurance can be a very expensive proposition these days, particularly if you are considering purchasing individual coverage.  Unfortunately, many people in Nevada, including those who are self-employed and those who work for companies which do not offer insurance benefits, are unable to access group policies.  If you are considering purchasing an individual health insurance policy, it is important to know what you legal rights are and if Nevada can provide you with assistance in getting a policy.

Nevada’s Individual Insurance Policy Requirements include:

  • Insurance companies may be able to refuse to offer you an individual policy based on your current health.
  • Newborns and adopted children may be covered for 31 days under their parents’ insurance policy.
  • Disabled children may be able to continue to be covered under their parents’ policy after reaching the age of majority.
  • Insurance companies can exclude a pre-existing condition for a period of time or permanently.
  • Pre-existing conditions can include pregnancy.  However, policies must cover any complications that might occur after a policy is issued.
  • Insurance policies can be canceled if you stop paying premiums or if the insurance company decides to discontinue the policy for everyone, but not for health reasons.
  • If your insurance company decides to discontinue your policy, other insurance companies that carry individual policies cannot refuse to issue you a policy and cannot apply any pre-existing condition exclusions from your insurance if you apply for new insurance within 63 days.

Nevada Check Up covers children under the age of 19 who come from qualified low income families.
