Minnesota’s Individual Insurance Policy Regulations include:

  • In Minnesota, insurance companies are not required to offer policies to every resident who applies. 
  • Pre-existing conditions, or conditions which occurred within six months of receiving a policy, can only be excluded for a maximum of twelve months. 
  • Insurance companies can only cancel an existing individual policy for premium non-payment.

MinnesotaCare is offered to residents who are unable to get health insurance. Eligibility depends on individual, or if applicable, family income and assets.  Coverage includes preventative care, immunizations, eye exams, some dental care services, and some hospitalization services, and emergency room services.  Members may have to pay premiums and, in some cases, a small copay.

Children, parents with dependent children, and pregnant women may be eligible for Minnesota Health Care Programs.  Coverage includes immunizations, routine physicals, hospice care, eye exams, and some dental services.  Eligibility is based on combined income and assets.  Some members might be required to pay premiums and small copayments.

General Assistance Medical Care is available to adults with low incomes between the ages of 21-64 who have qualifying incomes and assets.  Coverage includes outpatient surgery, hospitalization, doctor visits, and prescription drugs.
